HALO/HAHO (Parachutist) Procedures

High Altitude Low Opening or High Altitude High Opening Drops are often performed by military special operations members with assistance from air support pilots.

The Parachutist places himself at the predetermined drop point and altitude by using the Flight Simulation slew feature 5 minutes prior to the drop aircraft reaching the drop point.

Once the drop aircraft passes through the drop point (and the parachutist) the parachutist disengages the slew feature and proceeds to freefall to the ground.

Upon passing the drop point, the drop aircraft will transmit

"(callsign) Chutes away at (Flight Level)"

to the covering controller.

The flight plan of BOTH parachutist and drop aircraft must read Parachute drop at in the remarks section. The drop point can be a GPS fix or a navigation beacon.

It is essential that the controller knows of both aircrafts intentions at ALL times during this procedure as you will have a stationary airborne object to worry about.....the parachutist.
