Air to Air Interception Procedures (BVR)

The defending aircraft is travelling in it's assigned patrol route whilst under control by fighter controller aboard a surveillance aircraft.

The attacking aircraft is on an intercept course to the defending aircraft as indicated below.

In order to establish a positive radar lock on the defending aircraft, the attacker must be vectored by a controller into a suitable position.

A suitable position is where the attacker is within the 4 to 8 o'clock position of the defender and within 10nm as indicated below.

At this time, a suitable interception position exists between the attacker and the defender. The AWACS/GCI controller should transmit to the defender the following message.

"<defender callsign> RADAR LOCK BY <attacker callsign>".

The defensive aircraft now has only 20 seconds to try to break the lock by performing evasive manoeuvres so that the 4 to 8 o'clock firing position between the aircraft is broken as shown below. Otherwise, the defensive aircraft is required to comply with ATC instructions.
